Summer Storm Preparation

Heavy rain, tornadoes, lightning, thunderstorms, and even hail, are just a few types of summer storms that can cause severe damage to your property. Although we cannot always predict when a storm will arrive, it’s a good idea to sign up for storm alerts for your area to help you get yourself and your property prepared.

Along with knowing when a storm may arrive, it’s important to know what to do when one hits, and how you can make sure you stay safe during it. Here are some tips on how you can get prepared for summer storms to keep your family and property safe.

Tip #1 Make an emergency plan and keep your family educated

  • Your family needs to know what to do if a storm strikes. Depending on the type of storm, you should be aware of what to do to keep yourself and your family protected. For example, if there is a tornado storm it is best to go to a basement, closet, or a storm shelter – if your property has one. If there is a lightning or thunderstorm you should stay away from windows and doors to avoid injury. Keeping your family educated will help them be better prepared to protect themselves during a storm.

Tip #2 Keep up with your outdoor maintenance

  • Preparing the outside of your home is just as important as preparing the inside. Make sure that your yard is well maintained and tidy, grass that is overgrown can be a potential fire risk. Trim, or cut down, trees or branches that are encroaching on your house or hanging over your roof as they can cause impact damage to your home during a storm.

Tip #3 Roof and shingle maintenance

  • Get your roof and shingles inspected annually before a storm hits. Check the ground around your home for any loose shingles or roofing material. If you spot any damages or are not comfortable getting up on your roof to check you should hire professionals to inspect your roof for any damages so they can be repaired and allow you to avoid leaks during heavy rain.

Tip # 4 Be ready for a power outage with a standby generator

  • Adverse weather, like summer storms, are the main cause of power outages. Investing in a standby generator will keep you prepared for any potential power outages that may occur. Power outages caused by storms can last for a few hours or a few days, but with a backup generator you can make sure that all your essentials, like refrigerators, heating and cooling units and home security systems, keep running.

Tip #5 Emergency kit

  • Keep an emergency kit packed and ready and make sure everyone knows where it is. The kit should have non-perishable food items like, bottled water, blankets, flashlights, a first-aid kit, batteries, and any medication that is essential for you or your family members. If you need to get out quickly you can grab the bag and go, without having to worry if you have everything.

Storms can come with little to no warning and that is why it is important that you are prepared for whenever one decides to strike. It’s always better to be safe than sorry. If your home suffers damage from a summer storm or otherwise, contact us to get started with the restoration process.
